Land Information New Zealand Minister Maurice Williamson addressed ~ 400 senior executives at the ESRI Senior Executive Summit 2010. International leaders from New Zealand, Mexico, Abu Dhabi and Australia gathered to talk about spatial data strategies as part of the ESRI International User Conference 2010.

Maurice Williamson, Minister for Land Information, Parliament, of New Zealand spoke with enormous passion about educating his fellow ministers about not only using GIS but managing all government entities with geospatial information.

“I feel evangelical about this whole frontier,” said Williamson. “I have got the religion.” Williamson is focusing on developing a national spatial data infrastructure and raising awareness at senior levels within government that GIS is vitally important. But he faces a common problem. “One of the barriers of advancement [in GIS] is the lack of skills and quality of people in the marketplace,” he said.

The minister also cited us, Eagle Technology Group Ltd and some of the work we have been doing in making GIS more accessible in New Zealand.

Williamson cited Eagle Technology that is developing a web based learning portal to make GIS software widely accessible to all schools in New Zealand.

I received some great comments about the ministers speech with one user saying and I quote:

Your NZ minister rocked it today at the exec meeting. Every government needs such a passionate GEO advocate at the minister level

But the ESRI Senior Executive Summit 2010 wasn’t all about New Zealand, there were a number of other international leaders in attendance who provided their insights. A brief on each of their speeches can be found here which was covered very well by Directions Media: http://apb.directionsmag.com/archives/…

Last week I posted information about an updated route finder which was made available as the ESRI International User Conference 2010 is set to kick of in San Diego. With the size of the venue and the amount of sessions, its useful to have an electronic route finder. Information on this can be found here: http://geo.geek.nz/events/…

But what if you are not carrying a laptop? Well there is now a route finder available for those using an iPhone or Andriod device.

Based on your location and without GPS, you can list the sessions in a nearby room, and if you desire, the application will show you the path to another rooms or another sessions

This works without GPS by using QR codes. QR codes have been printed on sheets of paper and have been taped to doors within the San Diego Convention Centre, Marriott Hotel and Hilton Hotel.

The codes look something like this:

It’s pretty simple to use.

If you have installed a QR code reader application on your smartphone, you can scan this QR code using your smartphone camera, and the reader will recognize the pattern, decode it to obtain a URL, and instruct the local browser to load that URL. Once the page associated with that URL is loaded, all the sessions that are scheduled to take place in that room on that day will be listed. And if you tap on a session, the full description of that session will be displayed.

A 3D isometric projection has been provided so you can see all the floors and buildings and the path within the floors as well as the ability to access wheelchair friendly routes.

Here are some screenshots of this running on my iPhone:

After decoding a pattern, I automatically get taken to the web browser where a URL loads.

Settings allow me to change the route type as well as my Twitter client.

I can get information about a particular session or room.

From my current position, I can select a room I want to goto and the application will create a route for me. This route is in 3D. You can interact with it by holding and dragging on the map. This rotates the view in 3D.

Time and distance for my route is available as well.

Creating a route to a session is available as well.

Very neat tool to easily find your way around the ESRI International User Conference 2010. Mansour has posted full information about this service along with some links to iPhone applications that you can download and install to decode QR codes. All of this can be found here: http://ucpathfinder.esri.com/

Land Information New Zealand Minister Maurice Williamson is set to address ~ 400 senior executives at the upcoming ESRI Senior Executive Summit 2010. This closed event is part of the ESRI International User Conference 2010 which is set to kick off in San Deigo next week.

Mr Williamson will address a senior executive seminar at the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) International Users Conference on Sunday morning (early Monday morning NZ time). The week-long conference is being held in San Diego and attracts over 12,000 professionals from around the world.

"Geospatial information and technology is widely used in New Zealand and already contributes $1.2 billion to our economy. There are significant opportunities to grow this contribution through better use," he says.

Minister Maurice Williamson has been active within the geospatial community in New Zealand. Late last year the minister attended and was one of the keynote speakers at the ESRI New Zealand User Conference 2009. He was also a keynote speaker at our GIS Senior Executive Summit 2010 earlier this year. This event was attended by a number of senior executives in New Zealand including the president and founder of ESRI, Jack Dangermond.

With New Zealand currently implementing a national geospatial strategy, having the minister address the ESRI Senior Executive Summit 2010 and attend the ESRI International User Conference 2010 showcases New Zealand on the world stage.

The minister embraces geospatial technology and it’s great to hear that he will be addressing a number of the senior executives attending this years UC. His office has published a press release on his upcoming visit to the US here: http://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/…

The application is a great and useful showcase of some of the capabilities of ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS API for Flex and Network Analyst. The route finder displays distance in either mi or km as well as approximate walking time. There is also the option of search for accessible routes. Definitely worth using if you are attending this years UC.

The ArcGIS API for Silverlight 2.0 Public Beta has now been made available for download. There were a number of demonstrations and sessions at the ESRI Developer Summit 2010 showcasing the ArcGIS API for Silverlight 2.0 and now you can try it for yourself.

Version 2.0 beta of the ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight/WPF is now available for download on the new ArcGIS Resource Center. This is the first public beta release for version 2.0 that supports new features and functionality included with the ArcGIS Server 10 platform.

There are bundles of new features/changes/enhancements in this latest version. Some of these include:

Silverlight 4. Silverlight 3 No Longer Supported!
Silverlight 4 introduces major media enhancements, enhanced databinding support to increase flexibility and productivity through data grouping/editing and string formatting within bindings, more comprehensive printing support for screen content, and an extended out of browser experience that supports trusted applications.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 And Microsoft Expression Blend 4
Tooling support for Silverlight, new in Visual Studio 2010 includes an editable design surface, drag & drop data-binding, integration with Expression Blend styling resources, Silverlight project support, and full IntelliSense. Expression Blend 4 continues to provide an enhanced designer experience for creating effective application interfaces, templates, and animation flows. ArcGIS Silverlight templates are integrated with Visual Studio 2010, Visual Web Developer Express 2010, and Expression Blend 4.

GraphicsLayers
A set of new commands and an Editor class enable you select features. With the Select command you can define the spatial selection mode to add new, add to to existing, remove or use keyboard-mouse combinations to select graphics.

FeatureLayers
FeatureLayer is a new type of clientside operational layer that can be created and added to your map. FeatureLayer extends GraphicLayer and work against an individual layer or table in a MapService or FeatureService

Editing
At ArcGIS Server 10 a new service, FeatureService, was added to support template style editing. Several widgets have been added to support editing including the Editor component, a configurable out of the box editing solution.

Time-Awareness
The Map control maintains a time extent property for time aware layers. The ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer, FeatureLayer, and ArcGISImageServiceLayer can be time aware if supported by the hosting ArcGIS Server service. A new toolkit control, the TimeSlider provides an easy way to visualize temporal data.

Other Updates
Including new geometry task operations, route task operations, image service operations and functionality, as well as WKT support.

Full information on these enhancements and updates can be found here: http://help.arcgis.com/en/…

You can access the online SDK here:

There are loads of samples, concepts and developer reference topics that should help you get started easily.

The ArcGIS API for Silverlight 2.0 is really designed to work against ArcGIS Server 10. While the new features require ArcGIS Server 10, existing features will still work against ArcGIS Server 9.3.1. If you are wanting to take advantage of some of the new features but do not have ArcGIS Server 10 yet, there is a solution:

Many of the new features are designed to work with the forthcoming ArcGIS 10. If you’re not part of the ArcGIS 10 beta program, you can still get a feel for the API using an ArcGIS 10 sample server that ESRI has made available. All the samples in the online SDK use this sample server.
