It’s been nearly six months since we have seen a release of the ArcGIS API for Flex. Since then the Flex API has grown in popularity with users actively developing some really neat applications. Most of the new applications I have seen recently have been built in Flex and it’s a great showcase for the ArcGIS API for Flex.
Late last week, the ArcGIS API for Flex 1.3 was made available. While this is a minor release it does come packed with a bundle of “goodies”.
Concepts, samples and reference documentation for the ArcGIS API for Flex has been updated as well. There has been a few bug fixes along with some changes as well as a number of new method, styles, classes and samples.
Some of the highlights of what’s new in this latest release includes:
- Support for Flex SDK 3.4
- More styling options for InfoContainer
- Well-known ID 102100 (WGS_1984_Web_Mercator_Auxiliary_Sphere) is now a supported projection for Web Mercator-based overlays (including Bing Maps). It is also used in WebMercatorUtil for projecting coordinates between geographic and Web Mercator
- Miscellaneous API improvements and bug fixes
There are a bundle of new and updated samples as well. These include:
- Select and zoom
shows how to zoom to a feature and makes sure the whole feature is inside the map extent.
- Creating a WMS Layer
shows how to extend the DynamicMapServiceLayer to support a WMS Map Service.
- Accessing Custom Tiles
shows how to extend the TiledMapServiceLayer to support tiles created using 9.2 ArcGIS Server (which has no REST support).
- Create a Surface Profile using execute() for this synchronous Geoprocessor task.
- Show map extent and current mouse coordinates.
- Use unique value renderers to render drivetime polygons based on an attribute.
- Create equal interval class break renderers.
A detailed what’s new list can be found here: http://resources.esri.com/help/… Go download and have a play with this latest build!
Jithen,
I remember talking to you at a NZ user conference a couple of years back about the effect Flash might have on GIS and you saying that people weren’t interested in ‘large footprint’ applications which required runtimes – at the time you were advocating the ADF – this was of course pre-flex API days.
Isn’t it funny how things change?
I guess there’s so much more choice now right across the board – it would be interesting to know the dominant trend – I’m guessing that JavaScript mapping APIs are still winning the browser battle – but in the long term?
