The much anticipated ArcGIS Viewer for Flex has now been made available for download as a public beta.

The ArcGIS API for Flex development team is excited to announce that the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex (BETA) application is now available for testing. The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is built with the ArcGIS API for Flex 2.0, and is based on the popular Sample Flex Viewer that was used with the 1.x versions of the Flex API.

This comes on the back of the release of the ArcGIS API for Flex 2.0 which was made available last week. Information about that release can be found here: http://geo.geek.nz/esri/…

The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is an out-of-the-box application which offers a number of features.

It is configurable, so you can easily add tools and data content without programming. You can also extend its functionality with custom widgets available from the ESRI community or create custom widgets yourself with the ArcGIS API for Flex. The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is ideal if you want more control over the look and feel of your application. It is also a good solution if you want to host your own Web mapping applications (e.g., for enhanced security).

  • Ready to deploy GIS Web client mapping application for ArcGIS Server built with ArcGIS API for Flex Version 2.0.
  • Easily configurable to meet custom business needs and requirements – no programming skills required to deploy.
  • Viewer functionality is defined by widgets – many core widgets are included.
  • New functionality can be created by developing custom widgets using the ArcGIS API for Flex.

The concept of widgets has become a popular topic with many users developing custom functionality. Rather than having to build a viewer from the ground up, users can now leverage the viewers framework and customise the viewer as they require with widgets.

The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is designed to work with ArcGIS Server 10 and ArcGIS.com web services. It fully supports the new capabilities and is built with the latest Adobe Flash Builder 4. These include Adobe’s best practices and technology.

An ArcGIS Viewer for Flex Resource Centre has been created providing full information on how to get started and use the viewer as well as concepts, samples and a code gallery.

There are two download package options available.

Compiled Package
This download package does not include source code, but is already compiled and ready to use.

Uncompiled Package
This download package includes the viewer application’s source code. You will need to compile this before using it.

Head over and grab one of these packages to begin playing with the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex. With the support for ArcGIS 10, this will be a great viewer for many developers to use as a starting package.
