Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 Breaks Mapping Websites

So I was having a play this evening with the new Internet Explorer 8 and wow some of the results are pretty fascinating! I am amazed at the fact that almost every mapping website breaks when using IE8. Some even break if I am using the emulate with IE7 button!

Check out these screenshots:

Google Maps

Microsoft Local Live

Yahoo Maps

ArcGIS Server 9.2 SP4

So as you can see from the screenshots, IE8 breaks most of the popular mapping engines out there. There are problems with CSS overflow on some of the sites but also problems with JavaScript.

I notice the ArcGIS Server 9.2 SP4 template has some major problems. Panning doesn’t work properly along with JavaScript in certain areas. The good thing is that if you are emulating as IE7, the ArcGIS Server 9.2 template works fine.

Yahoo Maps, works perfectly fine, this is expected as it is built on Flash so it’s not effected. Google Maps and Microsoft Local Live need a bit of work to get working with IE8.

If you want to have a play yourself, head over and download beta 1 of IE8 here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/…

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 late last month. Since then I have installed it on a number of my workstations. Performance has been great and I haven’t had any major problems. Almost a year ago I tested the first beta release of IE8 on a number
