ArcGIS 9.3 Arrives!

After a long wait, it’s arrived! We received our office copies of ArcGIS 9.3 this morning. Being the ESRI, New Zealand Distributor we received the entire product range :)

ESRI has changed the packaging of ArcGIS 9.3. You can see some of the changes below:

The box and packaging is a lot smaller. ESRI are using smaller, slimmer boxes for ArcGIS 9.3. This is much better than the bigger boxes that we have been used to in the previous releases. The booklet “What is GIS?” that normally ships in the box has also been removed allowing ESRI to make use of these newer boxes.

On the inside there are a number of changes. The sleeves we have been used to have been removed and replaced with proper DVD holders. In some cases there are multiple DVD holders. I think this is better than the sleeves which used to rip or tear at times.

As before ArcSDE now ships in the ArcGIS Server package. ArcGIS Explorer which was a place holder in the ArcGIS 9.2 packaging has also been removed.

The migration now starts to the final version of ArcGIS 9.3. We have been making extensive use of ArcGIS 9.3 during the beta stages and I now am working to move quite a few of these demonstrations over to the final version. By the end of this week I should have my laptop rebuilt to run ArcGIS 9.3. This should be a fun exercise which I cannot wait for!

This couldn’t come at a better time. I have been having a few problems with my laptop recently, just with other programs causing issues but have been holding off for rebuild till ArcGIS 9.3 arrived. Thankfully it’s here!

Customers in New Zealand should expect their copies to arrive over the next couple months. Unfortunately I do not have an exact date when you will receive your copy. We do get the entire shipment pass through our office so I might take a picture when it arrives just to let you know it’s not too far off :)

  1. Steve says:

They still haven’t changed the default "ArcGIS 9" on the box.

If you run a shop with multiple versions, this means you still need to get out your marker pen to let everyone know which version is in that box!

  2. ArcGIS 9 refers to the major release number.

Below it as you can see in the screenshot it shows the product and the version number.

As above it shows that it’s ArcEditor 9.3?

ACK to Steve. This is was always and will ever be: weird. Maybe we’ll find a nimbus in the Support Center. ;-)

Wow. Great post. Pictures of a box of software.

ArcEditor on the second picture is for ArcEditor Single Use. For concurent license it will say ArcGIS.

Has anyone tried running ArcGIS 9.3 on Linux using WINE? ArcView 3.3 works pretty well, but I was never able to get the variants of 9 to work.

  8. Rinkie, I can’t say I have but it would be interesting to see if someone could get it to work.

ArcGIS 9 up has many dependencies which is why is quite a bit hard to get working on something like WINE.
