Map Caching Case Study Using New Zealand TopoOnline
ESRI has posted a nice map caching case study using New Zealand Topographic Maps. It talks about the New Zealand 1:50,000 Topographic Maps and the process involved in going about generating a cache.
Source data from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) was in Laserscan IFF format. This was massaged and made available in an .mxd which was then published up using ArcGIS Server. The caching exercise then began to generate a number of .jpegs for faster viewing.
More information about this case study can be found here: http://blogs.esri.com/dev/…
It’s great to see New Zealand being featured in this case study. We actually host New Zealand TopoOnline for LINZ. This has been running ArcIMS for a number of years now. A new faster viewing option of New Zealand TopoOnline using ArcGIS Server will be coming. I wrote up about this here: http://geo.geek.nz/esri-new-zealand/…
As part of this process I cached New Zealand TopoOnline earlier this year.
Have a look at http://demos.eaglegis.co.nz/linz-topoonlinecached/… which will show a similar site as the case study above.
Some statistics in comparison:
Format: .PNG
Files: 434, 332
Folders: 2,056
Space: 23.1 GB
Days: ~ 4.5
SOCS: ~ 2-4
Something to note though is New Zealand TopoOnline was designed for 1:50000. In our cache we decided to go down to 1:25000. Anything more than this and things start to become inaccurate. We also have this REST enabled here: http://demos.eaglegis.co.nz/arcgis/… We have been making use of these for backgrounds and basemaps.
Works very well!
Please note the above links are only for demonstration purposes. Also check out http://www.eaglegis.co.nz/demonstrations. We will be adding loads more as time goes on. At the moment we have some good basemaps that we have been making use of in mashups. I am currently in the process of updating our servers to ArcGIS 9.3 SP1 so things might be up and down.

Great blog, this could be the best blog I ever visited this month. Never stop to write something useful dude!
