With Microsoft Windows 7 set to be launched on October 22nd, many users have been asking about ArcGIS support. Well some great news today is that ArcGIS 9.3.1 is now supported on Windows 7.

We are pleased to announce that the following ESRI products and versions are now supported on the Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System:

ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 and 9.3.1
ArcReader 9.3 and 9.3.1
ArcINFO Workstation 9.3 and 9.3.1
ArcGIS Engine 9.3 and 9.3.1

I have been using Windows 7 since the beta release, then onto release candidate and now final and I have yet to find any showstoppers when running ArcGIS 9.3.1. Something to note however:

ESRI Server products (ArcGIS Server, ArcSDE and ArcIMS) are not supported on Windows 7 at this time due to some known issues with Internet Explorer 8. ESRI is planning to support ESRI Server products on Windows 7 with the 9.4 release of the software.

With regards to ArcGIS Server 9.3.1, I have been running this on my laptop with Windows 7 since the release candidate version as well. There are a few minor issues but no showstoppers. My post here talks about installing ArcGIS 9.3.1 on Windows 7: http://geo.geek.nz/esri/…

As mentioned above, full support is planned for ArcGIS 9.4, ArcGIS Server 9.4 on Windows 7.

This announcement was made as part of the post which can be found here: http://blogs.esri.com/support/…

  2. Any word on ArcGIS Explorer? I found it incompatible with Windows 7.

  3. Hi Jarlath,

ArcGIS Explorer 900 will work on Windows 7 but it is yet to be certified. I haven’t noticed any problems With ArcGIS Explorer 900 on my build?

    Cheers

I tried to install 9.3.1 on my WIN7RC MSI laptop and it wouldn’t go. Had to sit through a long rollback. Guess I should wait until 7 is official????? or should I try it again???? Other programs give me the "This program could not install under current settings. Would you like to try again with the correct settings?" pop-up and install correctly (I think!) What say you, one and all????????

I have been working ArcGIS 9.2 and Windows 7 so several months. No problems also. Just got to make sure SP6 is installed (similar to how to install on Vista). In fact windows 7 runs 9.2 faster than XP and Vista.

  6. Hi Pat,

I had ArcGIS 9.3.1 running on Windows 7 RC for a very long while. This was on my primary laptop at work as well. Never had many problems installing or using it. I have few posts that might help. Have a search around.

    Cheers

I’ve been very pleased with 9.3 on Windows 7 release candidate.

  8. Wouter says:

If arcgis server only has issues with ie 8, is it then possible to install it, and use an other browser: firefox, chrome or safari?

  9. Not luck with the latest build of ArcGIS Explorer on our systems running Windows 7. ArcGIS Desktop works fine. I wonder what the catch is.

  10. Hi Wouter,

Yes you can still install ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 on Windows 7. In fact I have this running. See my link above in the post which will talk about one issue with IIS. Apart from that you can just run IE8 in IE7 compatbility mode and that will work fine.

    Cheers

  11. Hi Jarlath,

What problems are you experiencing with AGX on Windows 7?

  12. We can install ArcGIS Explorer, but no globe displays in the main windows. The application shows up, but in the main viewer it simply displays the desktop background. Very strange. It’s the only geospatial application we cannot get to work on Windows 7.
