ArcPad 8.0 Extension For ArcGIS Server Is Not Compatible With ArcGIS Server 9.3.1

ArcPad 8.0 was released last month and came bundled with a number of new features and enhancements. One of the newest features added to ArcPad 8.0 is the ArcPad 8.0 Extension for ArcGIS Server. The extension allows users to connect to ArcGIS Server 9.3 services and synchronise data over the air.

Those that have tried to use the ArcPad 8.0 Extension for ArcGIS Server on ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 would have noticed a few problems with map services.

Starting a service or create a new service after upgrading to ArcGIS 9.3.1 when also using ArcGIS Server ArcPad 8 Extensions returns the following error:

"Unable to Start service.
Error (Server object instance creation failed on all SOC machines. Server Object instance creation failed on machine <machine_name>. CLSID for Type MapServer is not registered)."

However, map services with ArcPad 8 Server capabilities do operate without problems and without error. This behavior did not occur prior to installing the ArcGIS 9.3.1 upgrade.

Installing the ArcPad 8.0 Extension for ArcGIS Server on ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 results in corruption of existing ArcGIS Server map services.

All map services are stopped and are unable to be restarted. New map services cannot be published.

ESRI is aware of this issue and is working on a fix which will be made available as soon as possible.

ESRI is actively working on a fix for this issue. We recommend that customers using the ArcGIS Server ArcPad Extension 8.0 and its capabilities not upgrade to ArcGIS 9.3.1 at this time.

There are no known issues when using ArcGIS Server ArcPad Extension 8.0 with ArcGIS 9.3 or 9.3 Service Pack 1.

I will post an update when a fix has been released. In the meanwhile, keep an eye on the ESRI Support Centre article here: http://support.esri.com/index.cfm…

  1. I say, skip the headache of ArcPad & go ArcGIS Mobile. We offer it in a Hosted (SaaS) Model – The Data Collection Infrastructure (DCI).

The one major limitation (unless that has changed with 9.3.1) is that you only get ArcGIS mobile if you buy ArcGIS Server Advanced.

    They will never merge as

ESRI see it as a horses for courses idea. The will never merge as one product as ArcPad isn’t made by ESRI. I do however see that in the next two years the functionality provided in the two apps will blur somewhat

As for differences….. ArcGIS Mobile is seen as just an extension to the ArcGIS Server, where as ArcPad is seen as a true Mobile GIS application. ArcPad has built in GIS functionality available to use off the bat. I think (somebody can correct me on this) the actual work is done on the device in ArcPad where as on ArcGIS mobile it goes back to the server to do the work.

If you are a person doing full on GIS type work out in the field and or doing alot or are doing alot of disconnected editing then ArcPad is the better choice.

For more simplistic captures, surveys etc ArcGIS Mobile is the better choice as you can simplify and streamline the workflow process.

This problem has ben fixed in ArcPad 8 SP1 download this for free from:

I installed the SP1 patch, but did not solve the problem.I tried to replace the official website of the method of dat file, but when released, Mapserver service has disappeared in the type of service. What can be the solution?
