ESRI Announces Relationship With Amazon Web Services

Fresh out of the ESRI Federal User Conference 2010 that kicked off today in Washington, ESRI announced a new and exciting relationship with Amazon Web Services.

As part of its commitment to support cloud computing, ESRI is collaborating with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to join the growing community of AWS Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) building services and solutions in the cloud computing environment.

As users begin to think about cloud computing this new relationship provides a easy go to option. ESRI is working to make ArcGIS available via the cloud and working with the biggest cloud computing provider out there is a great start!

We have a growing user base that’s interested in cloud computing and the benefits it promises,” says Jack Dangermond, president, ESRI. “We’re excited about working with Amazon Web Services and joining their software vendor community. We’ll continue to move forward to provide leading solutions that will meet customer needs now and into the future.”

“ArcGIS provides a standards-based platform for spatial analysis, data management, and mapping. Making ArcGIS available via cloud computing will give customers a secure, scalable, and easy-to-deploy Web option for enterprise data visualization and geospatial analytics.”

From a GIS perspective this new relationship is a major step forward. ESRI has basically added another platform to growing list that’s available to the user base. The concept of cloud computing is growing rapidly through the industry and as businesses look to streamline and minimise cost this could be alternative option with powerful benefits.

  1. This is very exciting. Will this have any impact on the memory limitations imposed by ArcGIS from geoprocessing standpoint? I can see the advantages of the cloud, but if the software is still 32-bit and single-threaded then the ability to analyze today’s large datasets won’t benefit all that much, if at all.

  2. Guys,

I think it’s still too early to tell what’s going to be available. The news is exciting and its fresh our of the Federal User Conference 2010.

I think we should see information on this relationship coming in the next few weeks.

    Cheers

sounds like a double loss. lock into arcgis server – then lock into the single proprietary hosting platform – oh i mean “cloud”. i cant control software costs or maintenance fees – now i cant control server performance – platform storage or bandwidth costs either. just let the meter run at amazon.
