Installing ArcGIS 9.3.1 And ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 On Microsoft Windows 7

Over the weekend I updated my laptop to Microsoft Windows 7. I was previously running Microsoft Windows Vista SP2. After a short while I had most of my environment up and running again. It was a great time to install Windows 7 as ArcGIS 9.3.1 had arrived and I tend to rebuild my machine whenever a new version comes out.

Installing ArcGIS 9.3 on Windows 7, I had some initial installation problems but eventually got things to work. I wrote up about these here: http://geo.geek.nz/esri/… Installing ArcGIS 9.3.1 on Windows 7 and everything went very well. No problems with the installation. Within a few minutes I had ArcGIS 9.3.1 up and running.

So far ArcGIS 9.3.1 is running well. It was now onto installing ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 on Windows 7. There are few things required to get the installation of ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 correct. Firstly have a look at the additional requirements. These instructions are for Windows Vista but the same apply for Windows 7. You can find these here: http://resources.esri.com/help/… If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows 7, make sure you configure IIS and .NET to run in 32-bit mode. You can find this instructions here: http://resources.esri.com/help/… Once these are done, it’s onto the installation. Accepting all the default options, the installation should run through fine, ArcGIS 9.3.1 should work. You can publish your MXD’s or MSD’s.

One problem I have found was with the ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 Manager. I have detailed below about the error and how you can go about fixing it.

Start the ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 Manager.

This works well. Browsing to Services, you will get an error as follows:

An error has occured on the server. For details please check the Event (Application) log on the web server.
The Workstation service has not been started.

Hmm not good. Obviously something is wrong. So the quick fix for this is easy. Basically an error is being thrown because of permission issues. Now this is not an ideal fix but it works around the error above. Head over to Computer Management > Local Users and Groups > Groups, and bring up the Administrators group.

Add the account that you are using to log into the ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 Manager with to the Administrators group. In my case I use a created account called agsmanager. Add any other accounts that might need to access the ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 Manager as well. Restart IIS by running cmd.exe and running iisreset. This will restart IIS for you. Browse to the ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 manager and try it again.

It now works, showing you any services running on the server.

The ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 Manager and ADF has also been updated to support Microsoft Virtual Earth services. Here is a quick Microsoft Virtual Earth OOTB application I created using my developer account from Microsoft.

Very neat! So far I have yet to find any big problems with ArcGIS 9.3.1 or ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 running on Windows 7. As I work through the week I will post about any problems I find and how you can go around fixing these. Stay tuned to my Twitter page or updates.

I guess I should remind everyone that Windows 7 is NOT a supported operating system by ESRI. I DO NOT recommend that ArcGIS or ArcGIS Server be installed on Wndows 7 even through it works and Windows 7 is awesome :)

    Jithen,

Great submission. Wanted to update you on installing 9.3 on Windows 7 RC 1. Leaving UAC enabled, everything goes well as long as you do the following prior to installation: 1) Get all available patches from Windows Update, 2) Make sure all recessary IIS components are installed (check Install Guide PDF), 3) Register ASP.NET 2.0 with IIS using the aspnet_regiis.exe -i command (if its not registered you will get a Web Applications error during setup, and finally 4) Start Setup.exe with "Run as administrator."

Setup worked great and you are correct… Windows 7 is great! :)

Great to Hear your setup is working. Please can you share your wisdom with a newbie AG Server? I am new to ArcGIS Server on my own PC. I have an EDN license which allows me to install any version so I installed ArcGIS Server Workgroup Edition. Went through the installation and realized I didnt run as administrator (or i think) so I reinstalled again and didnt do a post install because the users SOM SOC Web were still there.

I followed your steps but cannot see ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 Manager or local users and groups. Where did I go wrong? Please help/advise.

    regards

    I am totally confused
