[Update 1]

So this afternoon I thought I would attempt to install ArcGIS Explorer on Microsoft Windows 7. Downloaded the latest version from here: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/…

Double-clicked the .exe and accepted the prompt to run the setup.

The installer starts unpacking bundles of files.

You then get this.

Hmm. Windows 7 is not supported. Fair enough, this is good and something I suspected. The setup must be checking the level of Windows you have up to Windows Vista.

Even setting the compatibility to “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” Windows Vista wont work.

I am currently working on a solution so I’ll post and update once I have it working!

Update 1

Ok so I have got the install working. I was running across a weird problem with the windows installer that kept crashing. This is actually a known bug in Windows 7 beta. If you are experiencing crashes with the windows installer, implement the fix below:

Run regedit.exe. Browse to the following: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions

In here, rename the QWORD: MachineThrottling to _MachineThrottling so it looks like below:

Now log off the machine and then log back on. The workaround should now be in place. Setup’s using the windows install work fine now.

Unfortunately I cannot detail the next few steps in getting ArcGIS Explorer installed on Windows 7. I can however confirm the install does work fine after some tweaks.

Once installed I tested ArcGIS Explorer running on Windows 7.

It runs very well. Seems to be smooth enough and provides a similar experience to using ArcGIS Explorer on Windows Vista.

NOTE: Everything above was done for research and development purposes. I have been testing many of the ESRI applications on Windows 7 for my own piece of mind.

Windows 7 is NOT a supported operating system by ESRI and I DO NOT recommend that ArcGIS Explorer be install on Windows 7.

Still need to get ArcGIS Server 9.3 installed on Windows 7. Hopefully I will get onto this over the next few days.

I have gotten 9.3 Arc View Desktop to run on a Windows 7 box, but, 9.31 Update bombs out. I had the same issue with Arc Explorer that you are getting.
Let me know when you have a cool fix.
      Thanks.

I have now got ArcGIS Explorer successfully installed and running well on Microsoft Windows 7. This wasn’t really a big thing to figure out but due to the windows installer bug in Windows 7 beta it caused a few crashes initially. So it basically came

This problem wasn’t solved with the Windows 7 Release Candidate. I wouldn’t be surprising if AGX Build 500 never works on Windows 7 without entering the scary world of regedit. It might work within the Windows XP Mode feature. Hopefully the next build of AGX will not have this issue.
