Information about the new ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight has just been released publically from ESRI.

The ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight enables you to integrate ArcGIS Server and Microsoft Virtual Earth services and capabilities in a rich interactive application. With the ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight, you leverage ArcGIS Server and Virtual Earth resources, such as maps, locators, and geoprocessing models, and Silverlight components, including grids, tree views, and charts, in your applications.

So what can you do with the ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight?

With the ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight, you can

  • Display an interactive map of your own data.
  • Execute a GIS model on the server and display the results.
  • Display your data on an ArcGIS Online or Virtual Earth basemap.
  • Search for features or attributes in your GIS data and display the results.
  • Search for addresses and display the results.
  • Add toolbars to draw polygons and points, zoom in and out, or pan on your map.

From the features the ArcGIS API for Microsoft Sliverlight sits nicely alongside the ArcGIS API for Flex. The ArcGIS API for Flex was showcased at the ESRI Developer Summit 2008 was made available shortly after. The uptake on this was pretty good. Many developers have been questioning when ESRI will address the Microsoft Silverlight space and I guess this answers that question.

I’m sure this is going to be a big talking point at the ESRI Developer Summit 2009 which kicks off very soon. There are already sessions that have been announced so make sure you bookmark these: http://geo.geek.nz/esri/…
