geoTorrent’s
I have just been reading Ed Parson’s post where he talks about P2P geodata. Moving geodata across the internet can be hard especially when they are such big chunks of data. ISP’s dont really like this as it eats there bandwidth up really quickly. Now that geodata has moved into torrents this is going to be intresting as, ISP’s dont like torrents!
Im not sure if this is the case in other countries but in New Zealand, ISP’s really dont like P2P traffic. The majority of traffic through there network is P2P and it normally kills most of the HTTP traffic. For example have a look at my ISP here in New Zealand, and check out the graph of the amount of traffic flowing through. http://www.orcon.net.nz/help/status/bitstream/. You will see that that a big portion is Bittorrent traffic! ISP’s recently have decided to shape P2P traffic, and its regarded at low priority traffic.
While I think the geo torrents are a good idea for moving data across the web, im not sure how effective this might be. The link can be found here: http://www.geotorrent.org/browse.php?page=0
I guess we will have to wait and see if this will pick up. Also to note that a number of companies block P2P traffic. Be intresting to try and convience your systems administrators that you need access P2P tarffic for work reasons in order to download geodata
