Installing ArcGIS 9.2 SP2

So yesterday I posted that ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 2 had been released by ESRI: http://se7en.co.nz/cms/scrappad/archive/2007/04/17/arcgis-9-2-service-pack-2-released.aspx. Today I decided to install SP2. The downloads rocketed down from the US and add them to our mirror here in New Zealand, http://files.eaglegis.co.nz.

Since my laptop is running Microsoft Windows Vista with ArcGIS 9.2 SP1 and ArcGIS Server 9.2 SP1, I was interested to find out how SP2 would it would install. I can say the installation of SP2 was pretty seamless on Microsoft Windows Vista. No problems at all.

I then decided to update one of our development servers which runs Windows Server 2003 SP1 and how ironic? problems start occurring. So here we have Microsoft Windows Vista which is not supported by SP2 and the install goes well but Windows Server 2003 SP1 which is supported by SP2 has problems?

After installing ArcGIS Server 9.2 SP2 For Java and running the post-install I noticed that the ArcGIS Server Manager service was not running. I tried to start it and it failed. Checking the event logs I didn’t get anything useful. Basically I was getting a class cannot be started error or something along those lines. This left me thinking, hmm. I have since fixed the issue but it was a mission. Has anyone else had problems installing ArcGIS Server 9.2 SP2 For Java or .NET?

It’s running well now but it was interesting as I had never come across a problem with installing a SP. It was good to see some of the new features of SP2. They have made minor changes here and there on the ArcGIS Server side and a similar amount of changes at the ADF level.

It’s definitely worth a check out.

Yup, I had issues updating to sp2 on a server running 2003 Server x64.  Everything was fine except that, in the post-install the system.config in arcgis/services had its identity element screwed up.  Re-running post-install never helped; I ended up copying an old version of the file with a correct identity into the directory.

Yes I have exactly the same problem. How did you fix it?

It’s unfortunate that you had so much difficulty. Especially in light of esri’s decree to put service packs out more frequently and to include not just fixes but enhancements within them. This equals more testing environments for devs, more time spent installing patches, more headaches.
