System Design Strategies, October 2006

The latest version of the Systems Design Strategies document from Dave Peters can now be found on the ESRI website. This is a reasonable technology update on certain areas of the document.

Some of the key changes include:

  • Reorganize chapters to incorporate new design methodology.
  • Chapter 2: Introduced SOA Migration strategy in section 2.8.
  • Chapter 5: Established Enterprise Security as a separate Chapter.
  • Chapter 6: Moved Data Administration from Chapter 5 to Chapter 6.
  • Chapter 7: Complete rewrite of the Sizing Fundamentals chapter to introduce a new capacity planning framework and translate the standard Arc05 capacity sizing models to the new Arc06 framework.
  • Chapter 8: Complete rewrite of the Platform Sizing Tools chapter to represent vendor hardware on the set of new Arc06 platform sizing charts. The new platform sizing charts are consistent with the richer sizing models used in the new capacity planning framework.
  • Chapter 9: Complete rewrite to incorporate the new capacity planning methodology. GIS User Needs chapter was relocated after Chapter 7 and 8 in order to use the capacity planning framework to support the City of Rome Case study. Chapter demonstrates how to use the capacity planning framework to support an enterprise level system architecture design.
  • Chapter 10: Moved from Chapter 9 to 10 to accommodate the additional Security Chapter. Figure 10-3 was updated to reflect changes in the ESRI educational services offerings.
  • Appendix B: Updated to reflect new 3-day System Architecture Design Strategies training class.
  • Appexdix C: List of Figures update to be provided in future release.

So they have been quite of few changes on the sizing side of things. Head over and check out the latest version from the Systems Integration Services page at esri.com: http://esri.com/library/whitepapers/pdfs/sysdesig.pdf
