Inside The Geodatabase, The Geodatabase Development Blog

I missed this last month when the geodatabase development team at ESRI released their new blog. The scope of this blog will range from introductory information regarding general Geodatabase functionality to some more advanced topics and developer related material. We’ll be blogging on things like best practices, new and existing Geodatabase functionality, example workflows and updates from events team members are part of. Also, when...

Flying Back Home After The ESRI Developer Summit, Business Partner Conference 2008

Ah! It’s all come to an end. I am sitting in a cafe at Los Angeles International Airport killing some time before my flight back to New Zealand. I land early in the morning in Auckland then catch a connecting flight back to Wellington. It’s been a long day, just coming off a flight from Denver! My time in the US has been awesome. I really enjoyed the ESRI Developer Summit and Business Partner Conference. My wrap up of the ESRI Developer Summit 2008 can be found here: http://mandown.co.nz/events/… Look forward to catching up with everyone next year! Brian, hopefully you can make it...

Download The ArcGIS Server 9.3 Flex API Presentation That Was Given At The ESRI Developer Summit 2008

This was quite a talking point of the ESRI Developer Summit. Due to other presentations on many were not able to get along to see this. Mansour Raad has now made this presentation available. This API is intended to be released post 9.3 and will be based on the REST protocol and is very closely modeled after the JavaScript API. The download has been made available from his blog rather and can be downloaded here: http://thunderheadxpler.blogspot.com/2008/… Mansour’s post on this can be found here: http://thunderheadxpler.blogspot.com/2008/… Thanks for Mansour for making this...

Wrapping Up The ESRI Developer Summit 2008

So its over and I thought I would write a quick wrap up of the ESRI Developer Summit 2008. Firstly I wanted to say a big thanks everyone involved in organising and putting this event together, the event exceeded my expectations. It was well organised and just perfect. Secondly a big thanks to all the presenters. I know what it’s like preparing presentations and demos and everyone did a great job. This was one of the best conferences I have been to. ESRI did a great a job. The ESRI Developer Summit has really evolved over the last three years and at its current stage ranks right up there. ESRI is...

Day 2 Implementing Security For ArcGIS Server .NET Solutions At The ESRI Developer Summit 2008

Security has been a big question when it comes to ArcGIS Server. We have a number of clients asking how to go about implementing simple security with ArcGIS Server. This was never easy in the past and a custom solution was required or IIS security but with ArcGIS Server 9.3, they have addressed this issue with some great options. Using the ArcGIS Server Manager you are now able to enable and control security. The ArcGIS Server Manager enabled security for services and the API’s. ArcGIS Server 9.3 has role based security and makes use of the ASP.NET security framework. For services there is a new...

Day 2 Building .NET Applications Using The ArcGIS Server Web ADF and ASP.NET AJAX At The ESRI Developer Summit 2008

Wow I am finally catching up with all these sessions. Another big session that I was looking forward to. Since I work quite extensively with the ADF and ArcGIS Server, I wanted to get an insight into what is new and what’s coming in ArcGIS Server 9.3. I ended up taking quite a few notes so here they are: A quick survey of the audience showed that C# rules over VB.NET. Quite interesting actually! So the model that Art Haddad presented was as follows: Client – JavaScriptServer – .NETHybrid – Balance The ArcGIS Server 9.3 ADF is a hybrid platform. ArcGIS Server 9.3 now uses the...

Day 2 Programming And Design Patterns For The ArcGIS Mobile SDK At The ESRI Developer Summit 2008

It was good to see ESRI talking about and placing quite a bit of focus on ArcGIS Mobile. Since it’s introduction ArcGIS Mobile has evolved into a powerful product with a great SDK. At version 9.3 a new out of box, configurable application called ArcGIS Mobile Editor is also available. I have been working on ArcGIS Mobile for quite a few months and we implemented a very similar mobile editor to what was showcased at the plenary session so it was good to attend this session to get an insight into some programming and design patters for the ArcGIS Mobile SDK. Some of my notes for this session is...

Day 1 Implementing And Optimising ArcGIS Server Map Caches At The ESRI Developer Summit 2008

I am always interested in increasing performance so I was really looking forward to some of the content in this session. The session started off pretty basic and kind of stayed that way. Much of the content was at a high level which made the session long. Some of my brief notes are below: With a few python scripts you can now estimate how long a cache will take to generate. Copying a cache has always been a problem. We have had numerous issues on copying larges caches from one location to another. This is because of the many files that exist. Using windows explorer will cause windows to index the...
