Early last year I wrote up a post about ArcGIS Online and the move towards migrating its map services to the Google Maps/Bing Maps tiling scheme. Information on this can be found here: http://geo.geek.nz/esri/…
Just before Christmas the ArcGIS Online Team completed this update and migration.
ArcGIS Online servers were updated late last week (services.arcgisonline.com, server.arcgisonline.com, premium.arcgisonline.com), and the hosted ArcGIS Online map services were migrated to the Google Maps/Bing Maps tiling scheme in Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (WKID 102100). These map services may be used...

At the ESRI Developer Summit 2009 earlier this year, ESRI announced that ArCGIS Online will migrate its map services to the Microsoft Virtual Earth/Google Maps tiling scheme. Not many attendees might have picked up on this news, but in the next update which will come through later this year, the tiling scheme will mimic those of Microsoft and Google.

Apart from now offering Street View, Google Maps offers great road, satellite and terrain data for New Zealand. The routing network also stands out allowing users to easily find directions for the places they want to get to.
New Zealanders can look at their homes and streets on Google’s controversial Street View software from today, but people’s faces have been...

So I was having a play this evening with the new Internet Explorer 8 and wow some of the results are pretty fascinating! I am amazed at the fact that almost every mapping website breaks when using IE8. Some even break if I am using the emulate with IE7 button!
Check out these screenshots:
Google Maps
Microsoft Local Live
Yahoo Maps
ArcGIS Server 9.2 SP4
So as you can see from the screenshots, IE8 breaks most of the popular mapping engines out there. There are problems with CSS overflow on some of the sites but also problems with JavaScript.
I notice the ArcGIS Server 9.2 SP4 template has some major...

This was another session I was really looking forward to. The new ArcGIS JavaScript API is a new API that has been made available in ArcGIS 9.3. The API allows you to embed tasks and maps in your application.
The ArcGIS JavaScript API is built on top of the DOJO framework. It allows you to use a number tasks which includes queries, locate, find and identify.
Some of my notes from this session is below:
The ArcGIS JavaScript API will be hosted by ESRI. This has advantages which will allow a shorter release cycle for updates and bug fixes. The ArcGIS JavaScript API can also be hosted by your...
