The New Zealand Computer Society (NZCS) today released the New Zealand Cloud Computing Code of Practice (or “CloudCode”) at the Cloud Computing Summit in Auckland.
The CloudCode was developed following calls from a number of significant Cloud providers for a framework of voluntary self-regulated disclosures and minimum standards for those offering cloud-based services in New Zealand. The CloudCode has been developed over the last six months.
The CloudCode has been developed as an industry initiative under the auspices of the New Zealand Computer Society (NZCS), the independent professional body of the IT sector. More than 250 individuals and companies have contributed to its development.
New Zealand is one of the first countries to develop such a code.
What does this mean for the EAGLE GIS Managed Services Cloud? At an infrastructure level our cloud provider IBM New Zealand conforms to CloudCode with many of their technical cloud engineers already contributing to the development of the code. At a platform and software level we are working alongside IBM New Zealand to ensure we also conform to and support the development of the code.
While CloudCode is a voluntary code of practice, it is exciting as it’s purpose is to enable professional cloud services providers to benchmark and demonstrate their practices, processes and ethics via a recognized third party to build trust with prospective customers.

The Light Grey Canvas basemap has now been updated with New Zealand coverage. This significant update provides nationwide coverage for a number of countries making it much more useful for thematic maps of subjects throughout the world.
The canvas basemap focuses attention on your thematic content by providing a neutral background containing minimal colors, labels and features. Its reference layer sits on top of your thematic layers, providing geographic context and allowing your data to come to the foreground.
The most significant change in this release is that the canvas basemap now contains additional, useful coverage worldwide, and detailed nationwide coverage in nearly 50 additional countries. This map was developed by Esri using NAVTEQ data for North America, DeLorme basemap layers, and Esri basemap data.
The canvas basemap also includes boundaries, city labels and outlines, and major roads worldwide from 1:591M scale to 1:72k scale. Thematic maps of country data, major administrative units (states, provinces, counties, etc.) and some smaller geographies benefit from this change.

It will be a key tool in the support and delivery of the Auckland Plan that will shape the future of the region over the next 30 years.”
